What is it?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. This is a new electronic screening system that is being implemented mid-2025 for anyone travelling to a country in the European Union. The system runs background checks on all applicants and is meant to improve border security and safety.
Do I need to apply?
If you are planning on traveling to any of these countries in 2025 or beyond, you will need to obtain travel authorization from ETIAS. You will also still be required to obtain a passport. The only exception is for travelers who obtain visas to enter these countries. According to their website, authorization lasts 3 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
What do I need to do?
The ETIAS website isn’t open for applications, yet, but keep your eye on the Latest Waves and our social media for updates. Once they do start taking applications, their website states it is a quick and easy online form and that most applicants will get their approval within minutes. The application costs about $9 and authorizes you for up to 90 days of travel in a 6 month period.
What happens if I’m rejected?
According to ETIAS.com, they may reject an application for incorrect information, health concerns, or security risks. If this happens, you do have the right to appeal. If (in the very rare case) you are rejected, reach out to Smiley Travel for other options on your next vacation.
